Study

For this project, we aim to develop a methodology for performing automated certification and accreditation, assemble a set of tools that support this methodology, and validate the methodology on two typical Defence related use cases. The first use case is an in-house developed APT detection tool for protecting government and military networks, while the second might be a weapon-system piece of software.

Main Tasks

  • Analyse the state of the art in the field of Cyber Ranges, as they are essential for doing research in the cybersecurity domain;
  • Compare solutions, design and implement them and continuously maintain and improve the Cyber Range as a whole, including its virtualised environments;
  • Put in place a digital twin of an in-house developed APT detection tool and continuously test and modify it in a simulated environment;
  • Study approaches to formal validation techniques and tests for automatic validation of cybersecurity properties and correct the system or the requirements by means of learning algorithms;
  • Possibly disseminate the work and findings through reports, publications and conferences.

Required skills

Technical skills:

  • A Bachelor or Master of Science degree in ICT, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Training or experience in Linux and classical development environments (git, ssh, etc.) is required;
  • Training or experience in virtualised environments or cloud platforms (VMware, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.) is highly recommended;
  • Training or experience in Java and/or Python programming language is highly recommended;
  • Training or experience as a system administrator is an added value;
  • Training or experience in cybersecurity is an added value.

Personal skills: 

  • You can develop software autonomously.
  • You don’t settle for sub-standard solutions and always try to achieve a high level of quality.
  • You can conduct scientific research at a university level by searching existing literature, analyzing existing solutions in a critical way and proposing new ideas.
  • You can communicate your results in a clear, concise and precise manner.
  • You are involved and focused on results.
  • You can work in a team and focus on the objectives of the team.
  • You take initiatives to improve the functioning of the team.
  • You take initiatives to improve your own skills.
  • You are honest, loyal toward the institution and respect confidentiality.
  • You can integrate yourself in a multidisciplinary research unit.

Other skills:

  • Good knowledge of English (oral / written).
  • Minimum knowledge of French or Dutch is recommended (collaboration with peers).

Specific requirement:

The researcher/scientist may be exposed to classified information and will therefore have to obtain the required security clearance. The candidate must consent with the background check required to obtain this clearance, which will be executed by Belgian Defense.

Application:

You will be working in a military environment. That is why everyone is expected to undergo a security verification. Please add to your application the filled out document. The form can be downloaded from: http://www.rma.ac.be/nl/aanvraagveiligheidsverificatie

Send by email:

  • a motivational letter;
  • a CV
  • a scan of your ID card (both sides) or international passport;
  • the filled out security document
