This week we participated, with the colleagues from Cyber Command, in the milCERT exercise organized by the European Defence Agency (EDA). During this exercise the participating teams get tested in a task driven response & investigation activities on full-scale IT Infrastructure live fire environment.

The goal of the exercise is twofold: 1/ to test the Blue Team skills of participating teams and 2/ to encourage communication and collaboration between participating countries.

The simulated network represents a generic military organisation and consist of about 55 different virtual machines. It has 8 different segments including:

  • a DMZ;
  • an office network;
  • a security and monitoring segment;
  • a critical infrastructure control center that controls the (simulated) energy distribution network of the country;
  • a public-facing website hosted in a simulated Azure cloud;
  • a military segment that contains a file server and a command and control system used for military operations;
  • a simulated Internet.
