Next to the very popular ChatGPT, a lot of other AI powered applications have sparked on the web recently. Globe Explorer https://explorer.globe.engineer/ is one of these, specially developed to explore knowledge and discover new domains.

At first, Globe Explorer looks like an almost classical search engine.

However, the big difference is how the result is actually a structured in topics and sub-topics. Each tile represents a sub-concept, with an illustration.

  • clicking on the title of the tile starts a new search, which allows to dig deeper
  • clicking on the illustration brings you to the reference web page

This makes Globe Explorer an extremely powerful tool for teachers that must rough out a field!

Hallucinations

However, just like other AI powered tools, Globe Explorer is sometimes subject to hallucinations. For example, when searching for “Belgian Cyber Command”, the tool illustrated the concept of “Defensive Cyber Operations” with… a killer whale :-D

So the job of teacher is not dead yet, and users still need to check the sources and validate the content!

Free vs Pro

Globe Explorer is free to use, and requires no account. There is also a paid plan with a few additional features like:

  • possibility to export the results as PDF
  • more advanced AI models ( OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude-3-Opus)

But for starters, the free version offers invaluable help!
